Although there are nitrate readings in surrounding wells, these waivers are being approved due to
proposed septic system being a Category III nitrate reducing system. The surrounding lots do
not have advanced systems.
These waiver approvals apply to the proposed absorption fields (primary and alternate) and
septic tank only. Any other future upgrade to the on-site wastewater disposal system will require
all separation distances be met or another approval from this department.

The following is in response to your request for additional information for the permit application for a
septic tank and drainfield for the subject undeveloped lot.
1. The permit does not include a well. A well will be required to serve the lot, and a permit will be
requested in the future. The site plan now reflects a "Future well" location.
2. A waiver is requested under the current code, with a fee of $1128, to reduce the separation distance
between the wells and septic tank and drainfield as detailed below. A previous waiver fee of $215
was paid with the permit application, with a balance of $913 which is paid herewith.
Justification: As shown on the attached revised Figure 1, the existing development eclipses the
entire lot with the 100 ft well radii. The proposed septic system is a Category III Nitrogen reducing
advanced wastewater treatment system which will be remotely monitored and periodically
inspected. The proposed code has deemed a separation distance of 50 ft to be adequate to protect
human health and the environment with this type of system.
The table below shows data for the existing wells. The well depths provide significant vertical
separation to the septic tank and drainfield which have a maximum depth of 9 ft. Soil strata
between the wells' source aquifer(s) and the surface in all wells provide an adequate barrier. The
aquifer pressures calculated at 17psi, 36 psi, and 13 psi are also sufficient to prevent effluent from
entering the zone. These factors protect human health and the environment.

Attached please find the application and supporting documentation to install a septic
system for a proposed 3 -bedroom house on the subject lot. An advanced wastewater
treatment system (AWWTS) will be installed, and a request is made to waive the
separation distance to surrounding wells to 50 ft, as prescribed in the proposed 2017
wastewater code Chapter 15.65 The AWWTS will be a Category III Nitrogen Reducing
system and will be remotely monitored.
The waiver will apply to the following wells:

Paradise Valley Blk 4 Lot 10 (west of the subject lot)
Paradise Valley Blk 4 Lot 12 (east of the subject lot)
Paradise Valley Blk 4 Lot 20 (south of the subject lot)
Paradise Valley Blk 5 Lot 11 (north of the subject lot)
The proposed septic design is based upon a test hole dug on February 8, 2016. The soil
log is attached as Figure 2. The primary and reserve drainfields will be located within a
30 ft radius of the test hole. The test hole was dug to 15 ft, encountering mostly sand
with some gravel. No water was encountered during digging, after 7 days of monitoring,
on May 8, 2016, or again on May 18, 2017. The proposed drainfields will be installed in
a sand stratum between 3 ft and 9 ft. The maximum depth of the drainfields is 9 ft, which
is 6 ft above the bottom of the test hole.
A percolation test at 4.5 ft to 5 ft resulted in a rate of less than one min/inch. Due to the
fast percolation rate, a sieve analysis was performed by an independent laboratory. The

soil was classified as SP, which precludes the need for a sand filter. The lab report is
attached.
The proposed septic system is a Category III Nitrate reducing advanced wastewater
treatment system, such as an AdvanTex® AX -20. The application rate for the drainfields
is 6.0 gpd/ft2. The wastewater treatment system will be remotely monitored, to ensure
that it is operating properly. It will also be maintained by certified and trained personnel
in accordance with the code. The proposed design is attached as Figure 3.

There are no surface waters within 100 ft or any slope concerns with the proposed septic
system. The lot is relatively flat with a suitable building site, as shown on the attached
Figure 4. The installation of this septic system will not adversely affect adjacent lots.

Existing septic systems in the area may have added nitrates to the groundwater.
However, the proposed AWWTS on the subject lot will reduce nitrates and not
significantly increase the concentration in the groundwater. Available tests on the
adjacent wells are less than 5.0 ppm nitrates.
