Street RECEIVED � � � V � Dn Anchorage, Alaska 99501 R E Subject: Seaview Heights Subdivision Block 6, Lot 1 T12N, R4W Section 9 Comments on Design Modification Permit No. 850223 was issued to this lot for an upgrade of the septic system that had supposedly failed last year. In June, when the system was to be installed the excavator, Mel Christianson, discovered the crib to be dry. Further investigation showed that the pipe from the septic tank to the crib had never been connected properly. Research will show that this system was never inspected before it was covered up. The financer of the project directed the contractor, through the AECS engineer on-site, to properly connect the septic tank to the crib and install a 40 ft length of 10" diameter SB-2 sewer pipe. Cleanout pipes were installed on the crib, and in the lines between the septic tank & crib and the septic tank and SB-2 pipe. An inspection pipe was installed at the end of the SB-2 pipe as well. A tee was placed in the line for the SB-2 pipe as per the original design. The solid PVC distribution pipe that feeds the SB-2 system was already manufactured and in place when the faulty septic tank crib connection was discovered. The engineer and excavator decided that the line could be left this way with one tee blocked off instead of installing all new pipe. This tee can be used if needed in the future and can be found easily. The absorption area should be approximately 67% greater than required for the soil test rating for this lot. This is assuming that the dimensions for the crib shown in the MOA inspection report dated October 27, 1971 . Any questions regarding this matter can be directed to AECS, Inc. at 561-5040. Engineering & Enuironmental Studies SEAVIEW HEIGHTS SUBDIVISION - BLOCK 6, LOT 1 - INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS/SPECIFICATIONS 1.0 GENERAL 1.1 The drawings, numbered sheets 1 through 3, are included in these specifications. All dimensions pertaining to lot lines, separation distances, and buildings are advisory and should be checked and confirmed prior to construction. 2.0 SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE SB-2 SYSTEM 2.1 The existing septic tank may be used. When the connection is made between the tank and the septic system, a clean out shall be installed at least 2 feet from the septic tank on the outlet side. The tank shall remain connected to the existing crib as well as hooking into the new SB-2 System. 2.2 The SB-2 pipe consists of perforated polyethylene (PE) pipe with drainguard fabric surrounding the outside of the pipe. It is important to ensure that this cloth is tightened about the PE pipe before backfilling. This can be accomplished by having one person lift one end of the pipe off of the pipe off of the ground while another person twists the fabric around the pipe until it is taut. One end should be securely fastened to the pipe with 1-1/2" black plastic tape (this type of tape is used by the telephone company). Once the cloth is twisted and secured with the tape at the far end the next section is then fastened to the previous section and treated in the same fashion. 2.3 An 8 inch snap tee shall be attached to the end of the 8 inch 58-2 pipe. The bottom of this fitting shall not be cut out since its purpose is for the monitoring of sludge accumu- lation. A rubber coupling can be used to aid in the instal- lation of the inspection pipe. 2.4 The distribution line should be placed on a 0% grade. The backfill shall be placed by hand and lightly compacted until the trench has been filled to a level about two thirds of the way up the side of the pipe. The remaining backfill can then be carefully placed in the trench. 2.5 As backfilling proceeds care should be taken to ensure that the standpipes and cleanouts are upright and undamaged. 2.6 Any fence that is in the way of construction shall be care- fully removed and replaced in better or as good as condition as before. 2.7 Once the SB-2 System has been inspected the backfill shall be graded to match the existing ground contour. 2.8 The grass shall be seeded with a fescue and white clover mixture. 3.0 INSPECTIONS 3.1 This design will require at least one (1 ) inspection by an AECS Engineer to ensure our recommendations of design have been followed. If AECS does not inspect this installation, AECS will not be responsible for any part of this design.
