The operational life of all wells and septic systems depend upon a variety of variables, including (but not limited to) soil conditions, groundwater levels (that may fluctuate during the year), quality of construction (materials and workmanship), and the water usage of the family utilizing the system/s. These conditions can vary, and are outside the control of GEG. Satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the system/s; therefore, GEG makes no warranty (express or implied) regarding the future performance of the well or septic system. GEG makes no representation whether an alternative well or septic system can be installed on the property in the event either of the current systems fail to perform adequately in the future. Per the request of our client (ARM Septic Services, LLC), the owner would like to upgrade their septic system. The existing septic system does not appear to be documented and the septic tank appears to be surcharged. Upon our initial arrival to the property to perform a test hole, we picked a drainfield location that we believed to be best suited in terms of topography and our ability to obtain gravity flow. We logged and perked a test hole (TH#1) in a generally flat, cleared area behind the garage. The soils were visually assessed to be a cemented (hardpan) GM to SM. The percolation rate was found to be 120 minutes/inch. Due to this percolation rate, a Cat III advanced wastewater system would need to be installed. We discussed this with the owner, and she requested we attempt another test hole on the site due to the high cost associated with installing an advanced wastewater treatment system. As can be seen on the attached MOA contour map, the topography of the property is generally steep (>25%) over most of the property. We did find an area that we believed to be suitable (albeit marginal) for a gravity-flow conventional type septic system, and we had a test hole (TH#2) excavated along an old unused trail that previously was used to access the backyard. Even though it is our opinion that an advanced wastewater treatment system would be the best long term solution for this property, the owner has requested us to design a conventional, gravity-flow type septic system We are proposing a new 1530 Infiltrator septic tank or a Greer HDPE 1250-gallon septic tank and a 5-wide type drainfield be installed. We are proposing the new drainfield be installed within the 30-foot radius of TH#2. The existing septic tank and drainfield be decommissioned per UPC. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. The drainfield will be designed around the 30-foot radius of TH#2. The percolation rate was found to be 3.1 minutes/inch which equate to a 1.2 gpd/sq.ft. application rate. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: No surface waters were observed within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. There is a ditchline southwest of the drainfield along the uphill side of Eagle Vista Drive. TOPOGRAPHY AND STEEP SLOPE DISPOSAL FIELD: Attached is the MOA contour map of the area. We have also provided a cross-sectional drawing of the proposed design which shows the slope information. As can be seen on this contour map, the design drawing, and the profile drawing, the proposed drainfield is to be installed at the base of a steep slope along an old unused trail that the excavator used to access the backyard. On the downhill side, the slopes range from 27 to 40% based upon the MOA contour map. Per the subject topo map, the slopes increase to 50-60% approximately 54 feet downhill from the proposed trench. All the slopes are heavily vegetated and should not be disturbed with this installation. As can be seen on the attached cross-sectional drawing, an imaginary 46 percent slope, starting 2.5 feet above the proposed distribution line invert, does not daylight within 50 feet downhill from the proposed trench and also does not appear to daylight with 100 feet as well. There is a slope greater than 46% 50+ feet (per MOA topo map) downhill of the proposed drainfield. We are providing you with some neighboring well logs and some test hole logs for the adjacent properties for you review. According to these soil logs and well logs, the soils in the area appear to be hardpan, sands/gravels, and silty gravel (GM or SM) to depths ranging from 9 to 60 feet deep. The percolation rates found in these test holes in the area ranged between <1 to 10 minutes/inch (except for our TH#1 had a 120 minute/inch perk). In short, the geotechnical data in the area appears to be generally consistent. We are proposing to connect the sewer line coming from the tank to two (2) different points in the distribution line so that there is no perforated pipe segment greater than 20 feet. This will provide more uniform distribution of the wastewater in the drainfield. The existing drainfield appears to be at the top of a 100% slope. We have walked the trail below this drainfield area (which is believed to be surcharged) and there is no indication of surfacing effluent coming out of this steep slope. Based upon these facts, it is our opinion that there is minimal risk that effluent will daylight from the proposed trench. If daylighting where to occur, it is our assumption that the owner would need to upgrade to an advanced treatment system with a large drainfield in the vicinity of Test-Hole #1. The owner must be willing to assume this risk in proceeding with the conventional drainfield design. In regard to the reserve site and topography, the proposed reserve drainfield would be installed on a generally flat area. Approximately 25 feet from the downhill side of the reserve drainfield bed, the slopes are approximately 32% based upon the MOA contour map. Per the subject topo map, the slopes increase to 50-60% approximately 65 feet downhill from the proposed bed. All the slopes are heavily vegetated and should not be disturbed with this installation. As can be seen on the attached cross-sectional drawing (B-B), an imaginary 46 percent slope, starting 2.5 feet above the proposed distribution line invert, does not daylight within 50 feet downhill from the proposed trench and also does not appear to daylight with 100 feet as well. We are requesting a 25-foot slope waiver from the downhill side of the reserve drainfield bed to a slope greater than 25%.
