This group is moderately frost susceptible, rated F-2. Unified classification is SM. Group A was typically poorly graded, contained all sand si-es, was damp and of medium density. Group B is a brown silty sand. This group is moderatly frost susceptible, rated F-2. Unified classifica- tion is SM. Group B contains fine sand and much more silt than Group A even though both groups have SM unified classifications. Group B should be expected to have lower permeability. Group C is a brown very sandy silt. This group is highly frost susceptible, rated F-4. Unified classifi- cation is SM. Group C contains fine sand and is typically damp and stiff. Group D is a brown gravelly sand with trace of silt. This group is non -frost susceptible to slightly frost susceptible, rated NFS/F-2. Unified classifi- cation is SP. Group D is typically damp, of medium density and contains subrounded particles to two inches. Group D is expected to be highly permeable. Group E is a brown silty sandy gravel. This group is moderately frost susceptible, rated F-1. Unified classification is GM. Group E contains occasional cobbles, is typically damp, of medium density and contains subrounded particles to 12 inches. Group E is expected to be less permeable than Group D. Group F is a brown gravelly sandy silt. This group is highly frost susceptible, rated F=4. Unified classification is SM. Group F is typically damp, non -plastic and contains subrounded particles to two inches. The soil Gradations shown on the attached grain size distribu- tion curves are for composite distrubed samples and do not reflect stratification which causes the soil to be more or less sorted in the field. Particles larger than about two inches are not recovered by the auger flights. These larger particles such as course gravel, cobbles, and boulders mist be detected by drilling action. The attached grain size distribution curves are not entirely representative as the larger sized particles are missing. When drilling was coripleted a 1 1/2" slotted plastic pipe was inserted in each hole to aid in determining the water Mr. Dean Thoirrlpe�� and Mike Stevens March 7, 1977 Page 3 level. For the percolation test, test filled with water and left overnight to the next day the hole was refilled with in the water level carefully monitored minutes. holes #1 and #4 were saturate. On returning water and the drop over the next sixty This procedure is not a standardized percolation test, however, we understand that the Municipality of Anchorage, Department of. Public Health and Environmental Protection prefers tests performed in this manner to evaluate a site for a proposed on-site sewerage system. Using the above test, the observed minimum percolation rate was 2.7 minutes per inch for hole #1 and 13.9 minutes per inch for hole 44. Percolation tests were not pdrformed on holes #2 and #3. A water level measurement was made in each hole approxi- mately 24 hours after drilling was completed. These free water levels, as shown on the test hole logs, should be used with caution. The free water level normally fluctuates seasonally and with percipitation. Since NFS material is required for road bases, there appears to be very little on-site soil suitable as borrow material for road construction.
