PH.1FAX: (907)345-1355 E -Mail: tgmoore@gcl.net M.O.A. DSD P.O. Box 19-6650 Anchorage, AK 99519 Dear Sirs: July 5, 2007 14530 ECHO CANYON ROAD ANCHORAGE, AK 99516 The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design narrative in support of our application for a permit to install an "Advantex" advanced treatment system to serve a proposed 5 -bedroom residence on Lot 15 of Shangri-La Estates, located on Shangri-La Circle. Soils logs, perc test results, a site plan, design drawings and specifications are enclosed for your review. Bedrock was encountered at a shallow depth throughout this lot, with the overlying soil becoming increasingly granular the further north one goes on the lot- The proposed residual disposal drainfield is in the vicinity of test hole #I where sandy gravel was encountered at a depth of 3.5 feet and hard bedrock at 6.5 feet. We propose to excavate down to the top of the sandy gravel stratum and then backfill with 3'— 4' of clean pit run sand to achieve the required 6 -foot separation from bedrock. Based on a slightly conservative soil application rate of 4.0 gpd/sq. ft. for the treated Advantex residual the required area is (5x 150)/4 = 188 sq. ft. The proposed 40 -foot long 5 -foot wide residual drainfield has an effective absorption area of 200 square feet. The proposed treatment system consists of a 2000 -gallon epoxy -coated steel septic tank manufactured by Anchorage Tank, with a single AX -20 filter pod that discharges by gravity into the residual disposal field. Based on consultation with the Advantex distributor it appears that a single AX - 20 pod should provide adequate treatment for this single-family residence; however in the event that the treatment pod does show evidence of clogging over time it would be relatively simple to add a second AX -20 treatment pod at that time. The proposed project will have no significant impact on present or future water supply and wastewater disposal systems serving adjacent properties, nor will it have any significant impact on reserved space or on drainage. I am requesting the property owners to come into your office in order to execute the required maintenance agreement. Please give me a call at 345-1355 if you have any questions on this submittal. The filtered effluent will flow by gravity into a 5 -foot wide by 40 -foot long soil absorption drainfield with an effective gravel depth of 0.5 feet. The drainfield is underlain by 3 to 4 feet of coarse pit -run filter sand. 1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections. All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform to Municipal and State requirements. All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless specifically waived. 1.3 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain any necessary utility locates, and to work around any buried utilities. 1.4 The contractor shall provide adequate cover material and rough grading over all system components to ensure that proper drainage is achieved after settlement and that there are no residual depressions. Extra fill material will have to be imported to the project site in order to achieve the required 3:1 slope on the downhill side of the drainfreld. 1.5 Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the homeowner shall be responsible for finish grading after the soil is compacted, as well as placement of topsoil and reseeding all areas disturbed by the construction. 2.0 "Advantex" AX -20 Nlode Advanced Treatment System: 2.1 The "Advantex" treatment unit major components include (1) a 2000 -gallon, 2 -compartment epoxy coated steel tank and (2) a single AX -20 filter pod. All components shall be Municipally approved and shall be set level on undisturbed soil and backfilled in accordance with Municipal requirements as well as Orenco's and the supplier's instructions. 2.2 All pipe connections to the tank shall be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings. The waste line from the residence to the tank shall have a minimum slope of 1/4"' per foot, and the waste line between the filter pod and the residual disposal drainfield shall have a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot. 2.3 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain the necessary Municipal electric permit and inspection, and shall provide a copy of the electrical inspector's approval to the engineer overseeing the construction of the wastewater disposal system. 2.4 The second compartment of the tank shall be equipped with a watertight, insulated manhole riser and cover extending a minimum of 6" above final grade with positive surface drainage away from the manhole. The contractor shall be responsible for determining the necessary length of the manhole riser, and for properly positioning the Recirculating Splitter Valve (RSV) in the riser. 2.5 The control and alarm floats shall be set at the elevations specified by the supplier, and their proper operations shall be verified by the contractor. 2.6 The treatment unit shall be set up with a "VeriComm" remote monitoring system as supplied by the distributor, and the control panel for the unit shall be mounted at an approved location. 3.0 Residual soil absorption system: 3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed by creating a 5 -foot wide by 40 -foot long excavation to expose the top of a sandy gravel stratum at a depth of approximately 3.5 feet below ground level. The long axis of the drainfield shall be parallel to a natural contour of the ground. 3.2 The bottom of the excavation need not be level. Any compacted or smeared surfaces shall be raked to allow proper infiltration. A 3'+— 4'+ thick layer of coarse pit run filter sand shall be placed in the bottom of the excavation and compacted by foot to provide the required 6 -foot vertical separation from bedrock and promote desired infiltration. The top surface of the filter sand shall be 5 -feet wide by 40 -feet long at an elevation of 0.5 feet below ground level at the uphill side of the drainfield. The sand shall have no more that 5% passing the #100 sieve, and preferably less. 3.3 A total of 1.0 feet of washed sewer gravel shall be placed on top of the filter sand with the perforated distribution pipes laid level such that the pipe inverts are no less than 0.5 feet above the bottom of the sewer gravel. Sewer gravel shall be 0.5" - 2.5" washed gravel, with less than 1% passing the #1200 sieve. The distribution pipe shall be 4" diameter F-810 perforated pipe. 3.4 The monitor tube and cleanouts shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on the design drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be perforated. 3.5 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the entire top surface of the sewer gravel. Frost protection consisting of 2 inches of rigid burial type insulation plus 2 feet of soil cover is to be placed over the filter fabric. 3.6 The top surface of the cover material shall be raised a minimum of 6 inches higher than the surrounding terrain to allow for subsequent settlement, and shall be graded to smooth contours. Fill slopes shall be no steeper than 3:1, and shall be extended out until they intersect natural ground. 3.7 Unless specifically agreed otherwise the homeowner shall be responsible for arranging to have the site finish graded after the backfill material has stabilized, and for placement of adequate topsoil and seeding to promote rapid revegetation of all areas disturbed by the construction. 4.0 Inspections: 4.1 A minimum of 5 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project: (1) initial stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans, specifications and construction procedures, (2) after the native material has been excavated to expose the infiltrative surface to ensure that it is level and at the right elevation, and conforms with the soil test information, (3) after the sand filter material has been placed, (4) after the sewer gravel is in place and the distribution pipe has been laid and connected up to the septic tank, but prior to placement of insulation or filter fabric, and (5) after rough backfill and grading is complete. The "Advantex" treatment unit requires one inspection after the tank is set level and the piping connected, but prior to backfill. This inspection may be incorporated with any of the above inspections. 4.2 The installer shall coordinate the timing of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently far in advance to ensure the availability of the engineer.
