Street Anchorage, Alaska 99501 ATTENTION: Bruce Erickson REFERENCE: The Nickies Subdivision Class B water system. Request a waiver be issued for the continued operation of a Class B water system located on Lot 13, Nickles Subdivision and serving the North Slope Restaurant in Eagle River. This water system was modified last summer and an analysis of the modification is included with this letter. A Municipal sewer system was installed in Market Street to the rear of the North Slope Restaurant between the restaurant and the well scu~rce. This sewer system was installed last summer and includes the manhole located approximately 110 feet from the well source. In addition the Municipality required the North Slope Restaurant to install a manhole at the rear of their facility approximately 134 feet from the well source. It is these manholes which require a waiver for the continued operation of the Class B well. Included with this letter for your review of the request waiver are: A. A plot plan showing the asbuilt conditions as near as can be reconstructed for the North Slope Restaurant and the well source. B. A schematic view of the existing pump house including recommendations for modifications. C. A copy of the Municipal drawings for the sewer system which was installed last summe~2on Market Street to the rear of the North Slope building. SRB 196X EAGLE RIVER, ALASKA 99577 page two North Slope Restaurant D. An.analysis of the instantaneous water demand requirements for the North Slope Restaurant and those for the other facilities understood to be connected with this water system. It is felt that the existing water system and pump house arrangement is adequate for the immediate needs of this system. We do not anticipate any immediate possibility of failure: however, the recommendations as shown on the schematic of the existing pump house should be accomplished within the next sixty days. It is also recommended that the North Slope Restaurant eventually be connected with a 2% inch service line from the Municipality water main located in the front of the building. It should not be necessary for this to be accomplished immediately, however, it should be accomplished within the next twelve months. If we may provide any additional information necessary for your review for this request please do not hesitate to contact us. sin~, ~ cc: North Slope Restaurant Analysis of exisling conditions associated with the pump house for the Class B water system, Nickles Subdivision. A 3600 gallon aluminum tank was constructed, understood to be dimensions of 4' X 6' X 20' and buried approximately 6' below the surface under the existing well house. This water storage tank should be acceptable. The only real problem associated with aluminum is its ability to with stand corrosion. The aluminum will sacrifice itself to protect any near by steel and if the water was heavily clorinated, any free clorine gas would cause extremely rapid deterioration of the inside of the tank. It is difficult to install enough zinc anodis to protect an aluminum tank which is the normal method for protecting a steel tank. It is our opinion that this system as installed will be acceptable providing a water tight manhole cover is installed in the tank for access to clean and inspect the inside of the tank for deterioration. The manhole cover would not have to be lifted under normal conditions except for cleaning and inspection. The owner of the water system should be required to enter into an inspection program to leak test the tank at least semi-annually and to visually inspect the interior of the tank at least annually. In addition all plastic pipe connecting the water supply system within the pump house should be replaced with galvanized steel with isolating unions. The tank vent should be installed in a water tight manner at least 24 inches above the outside grade. The sanitary well seal on the top of the well needs to be sealed in order to prevent any possibility of contamination. Minimum service line requirement would relate to a 2½ inch line. Future consideration should be given to a new 2½ inch service line off the existing 8 inch Municipality water main in front of this building. t //
