Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Septic System Upgrade for Lot 24, Clearview S/D. RECIRCULATING UPFLOW FILTER (RUF) SYSTEM To whom it may concern: 1. GENERAL: The existing 4 bedroom home is served by a private septic system and two private wells. The existing trench system is surcharged and must be upgraded as a condition for sale of the house. As can be seen from the site plan, the surrounding protective well radii and the existing septic system limit the available area for a septic upgrade. In addition to the limited area between the well radii, the area to the east of the proposed drainfield contains large amounts of fill. To install a septic system in this area would require the removal of 4 to 8 ft. of fill just to reach native soils. Given these site constraints, we are proposing to install the Recirculating Upflow Filter (RUF) system. Three test holes were excavated to the west of the existing trench system. The soils are summarized as follows: 2. SOIL CONDITIONS: Three test holes were excavated on March 10, 1998 to an average depth of 17 feet. Excluding TH #1, the soil profiles consist of an impermeable silt layer at the nine foot depth. Groundwater was encountered during the excavation of TH #3 at a depth of 14.5 feet, and was monitored at the 14 foot depth seven days later. Two percolation tests were performed between the depths of 4.5 and 6.0 feet and the absorption rate was measured at approximately 13 minutes/inch (see attached soil logs). 3. DRAINFIELD: The intent is to install a Recirculating Upflow Filter (RUF) system that will allow the use of a small drainfield in the area between TH #2 and TH #3. The size of the drainfield will be based upon the previously established criteria for the RUF systems, which dictates that soils percolating between 1 & 30 minutes/inch have an allowable application rate of 4 gpd/ft2, and soils percolating between 30 & 60 minutes/inch have an allowable application rate of 2 gpd/ft2. Given the perk rate of 13 minutes/inch the 4 gpd/ft2 application rate would apply. We are proposing to install a 5 foot wide drainfield that is 40 feet long and has an effective depth of 6 inches. This corresponds to an absorption area of 200 ft2, or an application rate of 3.0 gpdift2 (assuming 600 gpd total flow). 4. ORENCO PACKAGE SYSTEM: The STEP tank with the trickling and upflow filter will be manufactured by Anchorage Tank & Welding to meet the latest design criteria established by Orenco Systems, Inc. The point of contact at Anchorage Tank is Lowell McNutt. Since you are familiar with the operation of the system I won't elaborate. As with their standard STEP tank, it is equipped with a high water alarm per M.O.A requirements. 5. SURFACE WATER: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed upgrade. 6. TOPOGRAPHY: The location of the proposed drainfield is at the base of a hill with a 15% slope. From the base of the hill the ground slopes westward .at 5%. There are no slopes greater than 25% within 50 feet of the proposed trench. 7. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department that would be an improvement to -the proposed system. On October 18, the monitor tube was installed by using a Mobile Minuteman drill rig, equipped with 3 -inch continuous flight augers. One boring was drilled to 11 feet (refusal) at the location shown on the attached site plan. No water was encountered during drilling and a 1" slotted PVC monitor tube was installed. On November 2, 1984, the tube was checked and had no water to 11 feet (bottom of tube). If we can be of further service, please call. Notwithstanding that problem, the installation was placed well over ten(10) feet from the test hole site. Since the as -built had already been reviewed and accepted by this Department, and after discussions with Keith Bandt, Robby Robinson and Lee Reid of A.E.C.S., it was decided that a water monitoring test would be done at Municipal expense. The results of that testing are attached and show no water to a total depth of eleven(ll) feet. In my opinion, these results show that the system as installed is not in violation of State of Alaska law regarding the separation distance from on-site sewer to a known water table.
