The existing septic tank is to be excavated to verify integrity. If of poor integrity, the tank is to be abandoned and a new tank installed. Construction shall be in accordance with the approved site plan and design drawings; Municipal permit with any special provisions or conditions; and all applicable State and Municipal Wast·water Disposal Regulations. The contractor shall be responsible for obtaining any necessary underground utility locates. Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the property owner shall be responsible for final grading areas subsequently depressed from soil settling. On all leachfield mound systems, the property owner shall be responsible for ensuring a satisfactory vegetation growth over the mounded area. Contractors installing wast·water disposal systems must be certified by the Municipal Health Department for system installations. Owners installing their own systems must also receive prior approval from the Municipal Health Department. SEPTIC TANK INSTB?.?.qTION: A septic tank is to be constructed by a certified septic tank manufacturer. Construction shall include two 4" cleanouts for pumping access. The septic tank shall be sufficiently bedded to prevent settling or shifting of the tank. Ail standpipes on the septic tank shall extend a minimum of 12 inches above final grade. Page Two Central Birchwood Subdivision, Lot 168B June 20, 1993 Septic tanks installed with less than 4 ft. of cover shall be insulated. A foundation cleanout shall be installed one to four feet from the building foundation. In the line between the tank and the leachfield there shall be two adjacent cleanouts (unless an effluent pumping system exists within the septic tank). These cleanouts shall be located on undisturbed soil not more than 10 ft. from the tank. The first cleanout, in line, shall be to clean toward the leachfield. The second cleanout shall be to clean toward the septic tank. Final grading over the septic tank shall be such that a positive slope exists away from the septic tank. ABSORPTION TRENCH/DRAINFIELD INST~?~.qTION: Excavate the proposed trench to the dimensions shown on the design. The bottom of the excavation shall be within 2 inches of level. If the sidewalls of the excavation become smeared, they must be raked or scratched (ruffed- up) before gravel (sewer rock) placement· Once the gravel is installed, the distribution pipe is to be installed level with the perforations faced downward. Gravel is then to be placed over the distribution pipe to provide a minimum of 2 inches of cover over the pipe. A silt barrier must be installed between the final gravel layer and the native soil backfill. Ensure the silt barrier covers the entire gravel surface before placing backfill. Monitor tubes shall be of four (4) inch diameter and installed approximately in the locations shown on the design. The portion of the monitoring tube extending through the gravel shall be perforated from the bottom of the trench to the invert of the distribution pipe. This is equivalent to the effective depth of the gravel as noted on the design. Backfill over the final gravel layer must not be less than twenty-four (24) inches. Insulation must be installed when the backfill depth is less than thirty-six (36) inches. The finish grade over the trench must be mounded to prevent the formation of a depression after settling. Page Three Central Birchwood Subdivision, Lot 168B June 20, 1993 MINIMUM NATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS: Any septic tank proposed for installation must be constructed by a Municipally approved septic tank manufacturer. 0 The following pipe materials are approved for use in septic system installations in the Municipality of Anchorage: Type of Pipe Perforated Solid Cast Iron ASTM D3034 (PVC) ASTM F810 (HDPE) ASTM D2662 (ABS) Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No Yes Yes Use of a type of pipe other than listed above must be approved by the inspecting engineer. e Insulation shall be at least 2" thick extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Chemical Company Styrofoam HI or equal). Septic tank inlets and outlets shall be fitted with watertight couplings (Caulder, Fernco, or equal). A permeable nontoxic silt barrier (Typar 3401, Mirafi 140N, or equal) must be installed between the final leachfield gravel layer and the native soil backfill. ® Ail leachfield gravel (sewer rock) shall be 0.5"-2.5" screened gravel with less than 3% passing the ~200 sieve. ® When sand is being used as a filter material, it's gradation specifications must conform to AMC 15.65.060D. Page Four Central Birchwood Subdivision, Lot 168B June 20, 1993 INSPECTIONS: Typically there will be a minimum of three (3) inspections required during the installation of the wastewater disposal system. These inspections will occur as follows: The first inspection must be conducted after the excavation of ditches, pits, trenches, or beds and before the installation of any gravel. A septic tank may be set in place, but may not be backfilled before this inspection. e The second inspection must be conducted after the placement of the silt barrier, gravel, distribution lines, standpipes, cleanouts, and insulation, but before the placement of any other backfill. e The final inspection is to occur upon final grading of the property. Often there will be more than these 3 inspections required. Especially with the installation of multiple trenches, sand filters, pressurized distribution systems, etc. Thus, the inspecting engineer is to be contacted at least 24 hours prior to the start of construction. If necessary, a pre- construction meeting will take place on-site. Lambe, P.E. 4101 Arctic Boulevard · Suite 205 * Anchorage, Alaska 99503 907-276-4113 March 17, 1982 Triad Engineering 6937 Old Seward Highway Anchorage, AK 99502 Attention: Dave Grenier Subject: Soils Investigation Lots 168A & 168B in Eklutna, Alaska Dear Sir, This letter presents the results of the soils investigation that we performed at your request on Lots 168A and 168B in the Bi rchwood Loop Road area. This work was requested to be per- formed to the minimum standards of the Department of Health and Environmental Protection (D.H.E.P.). These standards include the drilling of a soils boring to a depth of 20 feet and the visual classification of the soil strata encountered by a field tech- nician. No laboratory analyses are requested. In soils which are visually classified to include more than 6% silt, {soil finer than the #200 screen size), a ~percolation test is required to be performed in the area most likely to be developed for the ab- sorption system. Our procedure for performing the percol.ation test is to drill an additional boring adjacent to the soils log to the depth intended for percolation testing., Coarse gravel is placed in the bottom of the boring. Four inch slotted and per- forated PVC pipe is placed within the percolation test boring and the annular space between the boring and the pipe is backfilled with washed gravel. The percolation boring is filled with water and allowed to saturate overnight. Percolation testing is per- formed the following day according to the standards presented in the E.P.A. publication "On Site Waste Water Treatment and Dis- posal Systems," Page 41, Table 3-8. All soils are visually classified in the field according to the Unified Soils Classification System presented on Plate 5 and the textural classsification system presented on Plate 6. Per- forated 1-1/2 inch nominal standpipe was placed in the deep borings to allow for observation of free water level after drill- ing. In soils with a significant silt fraction, substantial time, often several days, is required to allow the free water level to stabilize. While no free water was observed in these observation standpipes the days when the percolation testing was performed, it should be noted that the free water level may fluctuate seasonally and annually in response to seasonal runoff or heavy rainfall. The results of the field investigation and percolation test- ing are presented on the attached plates. The soils logs are presented on the standard D.H.E.P. form attached as Plates. 2 and 3. The locations of the borings are presented on Plate 1. The results of the percolation testing are presented on our form, P1 ate 4. We were requested to perform this investigation to the minimum standards required by the Department of Health and En- vironmental Protection. It should be noted that, in accordance with these standards, the classifications of the soils are visual and performed by a soils technician. These classifications are subject to change as they have not been verified by laboratory analyses. This work was performed for the the sole purpose of preliminary evaluation by the Department of Health and Environ- mental Protection of the suitability of the lots for on site sewer system development. Any extrapolation of this data for other purposes is not within the intent of the investigation or r. equested services. We trust the foregoing is sufficient to your ~mmediate needs and is comprehensive within its limited scope. If questions arise or if we can be of any further service, please feel free to call. COMMENTS *System is 13'from existing grade based on recent measurements. 5'of the 8'effective depth is measurable from the sump invert with 5'of cover. The 1993 system is saturated. Subsequently, the 1983 system was pre-soaked per code then tested. The septic tank is 35 years of age and the 1983 field is operating in the upper reaches of the effective depth. It is unknown how long the system will continue to operate satisfactorily for the users, based on these observations. G.
