Box 10-512 Anchoraqe, AK 99511 Subject: Percolation Test, Lot 2 Beacon }{ill Estates Gentlemen: At your request, we have completed a percolation test on Lot 2, Beacon Hill Estates Subdivision in the hillside area of Anchorage. The boring location is shown on Figure 1. It was drilled using a continuous flight solid stern auger drill rig mounted on a Nodwe!l carrier. The rig is owned and is operated by Denali Drilling, Znc. Drilling was supervised the test hole logged and percolation test performed by Mr. O.M. Hatch, Alaska Testlab geologist. The log of the test hole is included as Table A of this report. In interpreting the log, it would be helpful to utilize the explanatory information contained on Sheets 13 of the report. When drilling was completed, a 3/4" slotted PVC pipe was inserted in the hole to aid in determining the free water level. For the percolation test, the test hole was filled with water and left overnight to saturate. On returning the next day, the hole was refille~ with water and the water level carefully monitored, for the Dext 60 minutes. At the end of the test, water ~epth was 4 feet below the ground surface. Page 2 W.O.'A18948 This procedure is not a standardized percolation test, however, we understand the Municipality of Anchorage, Dept. of Health and Environmental Protection prefers performed in this manner to evaluate the site.for proposed onsite sewerage system. Using the above test, the observed minimum percolation rate for a ten minute period was 6.7 minutes per inch. We suggest that the onsite wastewater system be designed for an absorp- tion area of 150 square feet per bedroom. This recommendation is based on criteria in the "Manual of Septic Tank Practice" U.S. Dept. of Health Education and Welfare, Public Health Service. We recommend the absorption trenches be inspected prior to installing the system as the above recommendations are based on the result of the sixinch test hole. The seepage trench will provide a much clearer picture of the subsurface con- ditions than the test hole. If the soil conditions turn out to be more favorable than predicted, it may be possible to economize the system by reducing the length of the trench. Conversely, if the 'soil appears tighter than anticipated, then it may be necessary to enlarge the system. The chief value of the drill hole is in establishing the feasibility of onsite systems, while examination of the trench is ex= pected to provide better specific information. LOT 2, BEACON HILL BILL WESTOVER Gentlemen; We are resubmitting a request for waivers from the separation distances stated in Title 18, Alaska Administrative Code Chapter 80.020 This submittal follows the format outlined in a Memorandum dated January 3, 1985 on the subject of "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines for SCRO", prepared by Mr. Bruce Erickson, District Office Coordinator. State of Alaska, Department of Environmental Conservation. This Memorandum outlines a procedure to be used in the evaluation of waiver requests by assigning number values to geological features addressed in the waiver request. In this request I have followed this procedure and assigned values to the pertinent features as follows: 1. Vertical Distance Between Sewage System and Ground Water. The well log for this property shows water bearing gravel at a depth of 197 feet. The septic system is 12 feet deep. Vertical distance is 185 feet. Point value assigned 7.50 2. Soil Absorption. The material on the well log shows hardpan and clay from 22 feet to 197 feet. Point value assigned 5.00 3. Permability: The material described in the well logs has rate larger than 50 min/inch. a percolation Point value assigned 3.0 Tobben Spurkland P.E. Waiver Request Lot 2, Beacon Hill July 31, 1986 page 2 4. Water Table Gradient. This is a confined aquifer with 30 feet of pressure head. At maximum drawdown the gradient of the water table will be 0%. At less than maximum drawdown the gradient will be positive. Point value assigned 3.0 5. Horizontal Separation From well to septic tank 94 ft. From well to leach field 108 ft. Point values assigned For septic tank 2.5 TOTAL POINTS For septic tank 21.00 This total shows that the well is almost sure to be free from any form of contamination from house hold sewage originating st this septic system. The well is up hill from the septic contamination of the well is impossible. system. Overland Cast iron was used in the construction of the system. Septic tank has water tight couplings. Water sample taken during the operation of the system have not shown any contamination. I request that a waiver be issued for this property. Yours obben Spurkiand P.E. 2
