Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Sundi Lake Subdivision; Lot 4, Block 1
To whom it may concern
The existing three (3) bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The
existing septic system consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank, a lift station, and a deep
trench type drainfield. The drainfield is in a surcharged state and the homeowner is
having to pump his septic system frequently in order to prevent the system from
overflowing out the cleanout/monitoring tube. Two test holes where dug on the property.
The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of test hole #1. We are
proposing that a new 1250 gallon S.T.E.P. tank and a deep trench type drainfield be
installed. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached log which shows the soil classifications, groundwater
monitoring, and the percolation test results. The percolation rates were found to be
faster 1 minute/inch. We pulled soil samples of the receiving soil and brought them to a
lab. Alaska test lab performed a sieve analysis and a soil classification on the two soil
samples and found the soils to be classified as SP. Based upon the soil classifications
and the sieve results, it is our opinion that a sand filter is not required and that an
application rate of 1.0 gallons/day/ft2 should be used.
2. TRENCH DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications.
3. SURFACE WATERS: The proposed septic upgrade is near Sundi Lake. The 100
foot setback is to surface water (high water mark) is to be flagged by a registered land
surveyor prior to construction to insure this separation distance will be met.
4. TOPOGRAPHY AND WAIVER REQUEST: As can be seen on the attached design
drawing, the proposed drainfield is to be installed at the base of a steep slope near the
edge of a driveway. The area just below the drainfield is generally flat. On the northwest

end of the drainfield, approximately 30 feet north, is a steep slope that exceeds a 25
percent slope. We have attached a cross section drawing showing the profile of the
drainfield in relation to this slope. As can be seen on the drawing, the 25% slope (2 feet
above the top of the drainrock) daylights approximately 40 feet downhill from the
drainfield. We are requesting that a 30 foot waiver be granted for this slope. Mitigating
factors for the granting of this waiver are as follows:
• The existing drainfield is closer to this cutbank and is currently in a surcharged
state. There is no indication of effluent daylighting out this cutbank, even with
these conditions.
• The cutbank if heavily vegetated with grass which will inhibit effluent from coming
out the side hill.
• The porosity of the soil is very good, which should inhibit lateral migration of the
effluent.
Given these mitigating factor, it is our opinion that there is minimal concern with the
granting of this waiver.
