For some reason the tank was installed only about 85 feet away from the private well on Lot 7A, Bk 2, Sundi Lake S/D. Currently the home on Lot 7B is for sale, and it is necessary to get a Health Authority Approval; however, as you are aware, an HAA can't be issued until either a waiver is obtained, or' the septic tank is relocated. Because of the age of the tank, the real estate agent handling this sale, Sallie Nickerson, CRS (Coldwell Banker) has opted to replace the tank. There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed tank nor are there any slope concerns. The home on Lot 78 was recently sold, and the financial institution is requiring that the tank be replaced, or a waiver obtained. The current owners have opted to obtain a waiver, even though the tank is over 18 years old, and approaching the end of its useful life. Analysis of the contamination potential is based upon the criteria established by ADEC, January Srd, 1985. The specifics regarding this waiver are summarized as follows: GENERAL INFORMATTON: The well head on Lot 7A is buried, consequently, it was not possible to determine the static water level in it, or make an exact measurement of the subject separation distance. I located the well by first being told the general vicinity of it by the previous homeowner's son. Using a metal detector I was able to pick- up a strong signal in that area. I measured the separation distance from the tank c/o to the well as 88 feet. /his would dictate that the distance from the edge of the tank to the well is around 85.5 feet. This is consistent with the 85 foot measurement stated on the 8/5/76 inspection report. The static water level was measured in the well on lot 78, and found to be 97 feet. It is reasonable to assume that the static water will be similar for the well on Lot 7A. Attached are drilling logs from the wells on Lot 9, Bk 1; Lot 7A, 8k 2; and Lot 78, Bk 2. Also attached is a site plan which shows the location for each of these wells. It can be seen from the logs that they vary from 245-255 feet deep. The nitrate concentration was .14 mg/1, and there was no bacteria. In short, the water quality appears to be exeellent. No point value. DISTANCE FROM THE SEWER SYSTEM BOTTOM TO GROUNDWATER: Static. water in the well on Lot 78 was 97 feet on 4/10/94. The bottom of the septic tank is only about 10 feet below grade, and the ground profile in the vicinity is generally flat (See the attached photograph). Consequently, the separation distance from the bottom of the tank to groundwater is approximately 87 feet. This corresponds to a value of 6.13 points. SOIL SORB/ION BELOW THE SEWAGE SYSTEM: Soils from the tank bottom to groundwater are primarily silty saods, and clays. The value, based upon the well on Lot 78, Bk 2 (most conservative), is as follows: (40(.75) + 25(6) + 22(2.5)) / 87 = 2.7 SOIL PERMEABILITY BELOW THE SEPTIC SYSTEM: upon the well log from Lot 78, Bk 2 (most as follows: The value, based conservative) is (40(1) + 25(0) + 22(1.5) / 87 = .84 WATER TABLE GRADIENT: Since the water table gradient is unknown, zero points will be assumed. HORIZONTAL SEPARATION: The horizontal separation distance is approximately 85 feet. This corresponds to a point value TOTAL SCORE: The total point value for all of the above criteria is 12.07. According to the ADEC guidelines, a value 12-16 points indicates there is no potential for bacterial contamination, and that pollution from household chemicals is unlikely. Clearly, this is a case which could score less than 12 points, if the static level in the well were to rise, or the assumptions used in this analysis were sl'~ghtly different. Isaac's Pumping Service was call upon to bring a load of fresh water to the subject lot for a pump/dump type adequacy test. Water was introduced into the system for about 15 minutes. The rise in water level was measured immediately after the water was shut off. A rise of 4.4 feet was encountered with the introduction of 800 gallons of water. After 10 minutes the water level was measured again. A drawdown of 4.29 feet indicated that almost all of the water had been absorbed. 20 minutes after the water was turned off, all water that was introduced had been absorbed, indicating that the subject system is more than adequate for 4 bedrooms. ~ As we discussed during our phone conversation on December 4, 1986, the soil rating on the on-site sewer permit states a rating of 212 square feet per bedroom. The system was installed with a total of 490 square feet of effective absorption area which is the equivalent of 2.3 bedrooms./Upon further investigation, another soil log was found dated the day before the sysLem was put in. This soil log indicates 120 square feet per bedroom material was encountered beLween 5 feet and' 11 ~eet. Indications are that theJ~ used the second soil ~ ~ d~te--~-~-n-~ ~h~ s~-J~em size which is adequate for 4 With this information and the results of the recent adequacy test, we requesL that the health authority approval be given for 4 bedrooms.
