Dear Mr
Subsurface Investigation for Suitability of
On-Site Sewage Disposal; Lots 7, 10 and 12
of Block 2; Lots 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18/19 of
Block 3, Southpark Subdivision Addition No.
Berggren:
l'his report transmits results of percolation tests performed
· on the subject lots. Also included are the soils logs and a
location sketch for the test borings.
The subsurface inves.tigation consisted of 2 phases. The First
involved drill ing 10 test holes on April 10-1~}, 1981, at the
staked locations as requested by Mr. Dave Grenier of Besse,
Epps, and Ports. A second set of 9 test holes were drilled
April 29 and 50, 198~. They included 1 test hole for Lot 19/
20, Block 2, and additional tes~ holes on lots where exces-
sively high gro.und water was found earlier-. These later test.
holes were located in the Field at locations expect, ecl to he
more favorable for on-site disposal. We recommencied that
these later test boles be surveyed in to avoid confusion.
The test boles 'of this investigation were drilled to about 1G
feet using a Nodwell mountecl, Mobile 8-50 drill fitted with
sol id fl ight auger, owned and operated by Denali Drill
inc. The drill lng was supervised and the tesL holes were
logged by Mr, O. M. Hatch, geologist wit:h Alaska TesLlab.
Represen~akive grab samples ~ere obt:ainecl, visually c~assi-
fled, and sealed in plastic bags before retL~r'ning them Lo the
laboratory. A 3/q", peFfor-'aLed PVC pipe was placed in each
test hole Lo mainLain an open hole for rLInlqiHg the percolaLion
test and for monitoring the wafer [aOie elevation.

was measured at 10 minute intervals for i hbur. The percola-
tion rate was determined from the slowest 20 minute interval.
Tf(e results of this exploration are described as. follows
Lot 7z Brock 2
Two test holes were places on this lot. The first test hole
(TH ~10) was drilled on April 15, 1981 near the base of a
steep slope. The water level while drilling was about 8.0
feet below the surface. On April 17, 1981 and Hay 21, 1981
the water level in the test hole was 70 feet. A second test
hole (TH ~ZOA) was placed further west. The soil here was
found to be more free draining, and no water was detected
while drilling on April 50, 1981, or on Hay 21, 1981 and
Hay 27, 1981. The measured percolation rate was 0.5 minutes/
inch. We recommend a minimum value of 1.0 minute/inch be used
in sizing the system. The disposal system should be located
near Test Hole 10A to avoid interference with groundwater, and
should be placed as high as possible.
Lot 10/ Block 2
The soils encountered on this lot (TH 8) were coarse and Free-
draining. The test hole was placed on high ground above the
steep slope. No ground water was detected while drilling on
April 1~, 1981, or when checked on April 20, 1981. The mea-
sured percolation rate was about 0.2 minutes/inch. However~
we recommend a minimum value oF 1.0 minutes/inch be used be-
cause of the system's decrease in permeability with usage.
Also, the system should be placed near Test Hole 8 where the
ground surface is higher.
Lot 12~ Block 2
No groundwater was found in the test hole on this lot (TH ~7)
while dri II lng on April :/~, L981 or on April 17, 1981. The
test hole was placed on a bench above a steep slope. The
soi IS encountered were quite clean and Free-draining. The
measured percolation rate was about: 0.2 minutes/inch. We
recommend a minimum o1' 1.0 minute/inch be used due Lo the
system's decrease in permeability with use. The system should
be placed on the higher ground near Test Hole 7.
Lot 1_!~z Bl_qck 5
Four 'test holes were drilled on this lot; Test tlole 2~
and 2C. The roi lowing water levels were measure.cl.

the measured percolation rate was 20
Lot ~5, Block 3
No water in the tes~ hole (TH ~3) was encountered while dril~
ling on April ~0, ~98~, and was also dry on April ~7~ 198Z and
May 27, Z98Z. A-~q~R~q~gra~.e aye~ ~as-enco~nte~e.d at 2_to .~

7'SF FV iV ~lue of_J0 0_m. oL~e~/:_nch~ be use~,~bac~use of
the Iow permeability of the underlying silt layer.
Lot 16~ Block
The test hole placed on this lot: (l'H ~4) indicate soil con-
ditions similar to TH ~5 clean gravel overlying a silty
layer. No water was detected while drilling on April 10,
1981, but was measured at 8.0 feet on April 17, 1981. On
May 27, 1981, the water level in the test hole was 6.0 feet.
A sewage system at this location would require
~rovide the necessary separation between, the bottom of the,
~t~ and t~ ~as~n~l hi~ groundwater level, and also ade--
quate frost protection. The measured percolation rate was
10.0 minutes/inch.
Lot 17~ Block
The tesb hole (TH ~5) was placed near' the southeast corner of
this lot, in a gently sloping area atop a steeper slope. No
groundwater was detect:ed in the test hole while drilling on
April 10, 1981., or when checked on April 17¢ 1981 and May 27,
1981. The measured percolation rate was 5.7 minutes/inch.
Lot :L8/19¢ Block
The test hole was; drilled on the lot boundacy between Lots 18
and 19. The water level in the test hole (TH ti6) was 15.0
feet while drill lng on April 15, 1981, and was measured at
10.2 feet on April 17, 1981. The water' level was measured at:
7.5 feet on May 7~ 1981, then it was 9.2 feet on May 27, 1981.
Bounty Developn, ,t June 5, 1981
Mr. John Berggren Page 4
The higher' water level was probably caused'by thawing of the
seasonal frozen ayer, which ran into the hole from the sides.
This should be verified during the installation of the dis-
posal system. The system should also be kept as .shallow as
possible and may require mounding. The measured percolation
rate was 5.0 minutes/inch.
If you have any questions regarding this investigation, please
feel free to call.
Very truly yours,

A series of tests will be_ Derformed on the infiltration
gallery at South Park subdivision. These t~sts will give
infornN~tion on the ~nount of continously available water.
Before doing t31ese tests, it will be necessary to
disinfect the rock .~ia mid other parts of the gallery. To
effect this goal, aqueous chlorine at a concentration of 200
p[mn will be flashed dowa into ['_he syst~n. A[3p~.-oxi~tely 7600
gallons of water frown Little Rabbit Creek along with 20 pounds
of CalciL~n High-~est Hypochlorite (HRN) will be pun~x~ into
the culvert. A s~mll hole will be dug into the sand media a
few feet frown the cree~k. Wlwan chlorine is detected here, the,
[)u3~pil~g will be shut off to i.nsure that [~e (;reek and it's
aquatic life will not be affected. After 24 hours time contact
this chlorinated water ,,will be pu~ed out of the galley and
deposited on land so as not to ruJ] directly back into the
creek.
In the first test w~ will determirle tile ~notmt of water
available for removal. Water will be pumiced frc~]~ the culvert
for 24 PK)urs at a constant f]owrate. By t~nking intervallic

Mr. John Lynn
Department of Health &
Environmental Protection
825 L Street
Anchorage, Alaska
Dear Mr. Lynn:
Subject: Southpark Addition No. 1
As per our discussion this morning, Dr, Lee Reid of Alaska Environmental
Control Services and myself inspected lots within Southpark Subdivision to
determine if the recently installed subdrain along Southpark Bluff Drive
was affecting the water table observed in the area of Chasewood Lane. The
existing systems installed on Lots 1, 2, 3 & 4 of Block 3, were inspected
with no water observed. Lot 3 of Block 4 also did not have any water
in the system. Lot 4 o'F Block 4 had approximately 8" of water at the bottom
of the stand pipe (14 feet deep). The house on this lot is occupied.
It appears that the installed subdrain is functioning and is adequately
handling the drainage. As we discussed this morning, the subdrain will be
extended within Baugh Circle and northerly along Southpark Bluff Drive.
These extensions can be reflected within the Subdivision Agreement by
Addendum.
If we can provide any further information at this time, please advise.
Very ~ly yours,,
David A. Grenier, P.E.
