Subsurface Soils Exploration
Dear Keith:
On Apdl 16 and 17, 1999, we completed a subsurface soils exploration and study on Lots 1
through 4 of Storck Subdivision. This work was completed with the assistance of your excavator,
Chuck's Backhoe Service. Pdor to our field work we studied information previously completed by
Hawthorne Engineering concerning 'soils on the lots. His efforts indicated groundwater at various
levels over the four lots with some water levels as shallow as 1.5' below the ground surface. They
also noted, however, that in most cases septic systems could be placed on the lots based on their
results.
A total of 9 testholes were placed on the four lots with 3 on Lot 1 and 2 on each of the other lots.
All holes revealed well compacted sandy silty gravel which was visually classified GM or silty
.gravel. Water percolates very slowly through this material and our tests bore this out with rates
between 48 and 60 minutes per inch. Testhole No. 1 had a percolation rate of 67.5 minutes per
inch which is unacceptable for an onsite septic system. The Municipality will not allow construction
of a system in soils which percolate slower than 60 minutes per inch.
No groundwater was encountered during the excavation of the testholes. Based on the previous
work completed by Hawthorne Engineering, however, it is possible groundwater may develop
dudng breakup. The monitor tubes should be checked over the next 4 weeks to verify the absence
of groundwater. If no water is noted our test results indicate septic systems can be placed on each
lot at locations near our testholes. Due to the slow percolation rate of the soils the absorption
areas would be very large. A typic¢l absorption trench serving a four bedroom house in this soil
would be a minimum of 84' long by wide with 8' of septic rock beneath the distribution pipe. This
system would also require a 1,250 gallon septic tank. Such a system can be expected to cost
approximately $10,000.
Please note if the groundwater is found close to the surface in the next month the type of septic
system required becomes much more expensive. We will continue to monitor the water levels over
the next month and advise you of any changes. Enclosed are the testhole logs with percolation
test data along with the testhole location map. Please let me know if you have any questions.
