After discussions with the owner and field observations, the tank placement as it is designed is not feasible for construction. I am requesting a waiver of 70 feet to the septic tank and 75 feet to the disposal field. The change order is for lengthening the field and reducing the depth of drain rock. This will allow the distribution pipe to be located below grade rather than at grade as previously designed. Septic Tank to Well: The wellhead is located at approximately a 24 feet higher elevation than the proposed location of the septic tank. There is no way for a sewage overflow to reach the well head. The septic tank installed will be a plastic septic tank which has a much lower likelihood of leaking than the previously installed metal tank. A waiver will also allow for more flexibility in orientation of the tank during construction which can lead to straighter pipe runs and less likelihood of clogs which may occur in sharper corners. Disposal Field to Well: I am proposing a 75 foot separation distance from the well to the proposed disposal field location and changing the dimension of the proposed disposal field. The calculations for traffic load on the pipe are valid for this design as well as the cover requirements have not changed. At a separation distance of 75 feet the disposal field does not pose a risk to the well on the property for several reasons: Overflow is not an issue, as discussed in the septic tank to well section, there is no way for overland flow to reach the wellhead from the proposed location. Looking at the topography of both this individual lot and the surrounding area show the ground slope in the area is sloping to the south and the southeast towards the ocean and away from the mountainous area ranging from the north to the east. The plume of wastewater from the proposed disposal field will follow the flow of the land and flow away from the well casing. Evidence of this presumption is shown later by the fact that there has been no effect of the existing disposal field on the current well. The well log (attached) shows that the majority of the soil types seen during drilling was a mixture of silt with some gravel. This is similar to the soils present during test hole excavation. These soils have a relatively low permeability (250 sqft/bdrm) and would provide significant resistance to flow between the well and the disposal field. Due to the lack of similarity between the soil types presented in the EPA points guidelines and in the well log, a points calculation was not performed. However it is my opinion that the low soil permeability present in this area combined with the overall slope and hypothesized flow patterns in the area would provide sufficient protection from contaminant flow to the wellhead. The well log indicates that the well is cased the full depth to 100 feet below grade. With the approximately 25 feet of ground surface elevation difference between the well and the ground surface at the disposal field, there is a vertical separation of 73.5 feet between the bottom of the trench and the bottom of the well casing. With a 75 foot horizontal separation, there is a straight line separation distance of 105 feet. If the same design of disposal field is 100 feet horizontally separated from a well with 40 feet of casing at the same ground surface area would have a straight line separation distance of 107 feet. Thus contaminants from the disposal field would have to travel virtually the same distance in both scenarios. Based on the survey of the lot, the existing disposal field is located approximately 95 feet from the wellhead, within the 100' radius. The bottom of the existing disposal field is 8 feet below the ground surface. Based on all groundwater readings performed during the course of preparation for design, the bottom of the existing disposal field is likely below the groundwater level for much of the year. Samples taken from the well in preparation for a building permit on 3/17/2017 (attached) showed no coliform and nitrate levels within acceptable levels. The new septic system will serve a 2 bedroom single family residence and a 1 bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The owner desires the new septic system to be sized for 4 bedrooms to allow for future expansion. Soil Logs, design calculations, a site plan, and design drawings are enclosed for your review. Design Calculations Design will be based on the soils and groundwater found in Test Hole #3 as shown on the site plan and design drawings. Test hole #3 Groundwater: Observed 5.5 ft below the ground surface on 5/5/2020 Soil Rating: 27 min/inch = 0.6 gal per sq.ft/day Number of Bedrooms: 4 Required Area per Bedroom: 150/0.6 = 250 sq ft Total Area Required: 250 sq ft/bdrm x 4 = 1,000 sq ft System Design I am proposing a 1,500 gallon septic tank followed by a 50/50 flow splitter and two wide absorption trenches. Each trench will be 78 ft long and 5 feet wide and contain 1.5 feet of sewer rock. The whole system will be located along a bench on the property which is the former site of a trailer. The tank will be located along the uphill side of the bench situated in the hillside, this will allow sufficient cover for the tank as well as sufficient fall to the absorption field. The trenches will be located in the middle of the bench with fill brought in to raise the level of the bench to provide sufficient cover for the trenches. This area has been previously stripped of all organics layers. Values assumed 2 feet of cover. W' = 5.56 lbs/in' for Highway traffic P = 1.81 lbs/int for soil unit weights of 130 lbs/ft3 PS =11 PSI for 4" diameter Schedule 40 E' = 1,000 for Class II fill with slight compaction This gives a deflection of 1.2%, which is below the manufacturer's limit of 7.5%. Should the cover soil be completely uncompacted, giving a Modulus of Soil Reaction of 200, the defection would still be allowable at 5.3% deflection. in addition the design calls for 4" of rigid insulation to distribute traffic load and prevent freezing. All standpipes will be traffic rated. Due to the geometry and depth of the field, the bottom of the tank excavation will be approximately at the level of the ground water. However we can look at the worst case scenario, the tank is buried only with the top of the tank at ground level and is empty during the highest groundwater time. If we assume an empty 1,500 gal plastic tank and 100 Ib/ft' fill soil above the tank (the most conservative options), 2 feet of cover and the weight of the tank will result in 11,855 lbs of downward force. If the tank were buried with the top at the current ground level, the lower one foot of tank would be in saturated soil. This foot of soil would provide 3,500 lb of buoyancy. This equates to a safety factor of 3.4, which is sufficient in my opinion to not require any anchorage. soils: Two test holes (TH #1 and TH #2) were excavated on 9/21/2019. After a 7 day monitoring period and when measured in the spring of 2020, the ground water was found to be 1 foot below the ground surface. Test hole #3 was excavated on 12/20/2019, with groundwater observed 5.5 feet below the ground surface on 5/5/2020. This is consistent with the groundwater observed after the initial test hole excavation and 7 day observation period. Topography: As mentioned above, the system will be located on a flat bench on the property. Below the bench, the ground slopes down at approximately 20% until it reaches a flatter area. There are locations that may reach 25%, however there are no slopes in excess of 25% within 25 feet of the proposed trench that drop in elevation in excess of 10' below the invert elevation of proposed trench. Wells: The current well is located at the site of the 2 bedroom residence, greater than 100' from the proposed system. There is an older well next to the shop as noted in the design drawings and site plan. This well will be decommissioned prior to construction of the septic system. The installation of this septic system will not prevent wells and septic systems from being installed on the adjacent lots. There are no developed or natural surface / sub surface drainage courses within 100 feet of the proposed septic system location. The proposed septic system will not change the general slope of the area.
