It was not possible to place the new tank 10' from the foundation due to the location of the existing tank and the depth of the excavation- to avoid creating a giant hole, we had to place the tank in the same spot. A small section of the new tank is 10' from corner of the building, just where the old tank was. The attached drawing illustrates the septic tank and its location in relation to the house foundation. As we did not expose the footing, we do not know how far down it extends. The ground slopes down sharply in this area toward the back yard, so we anticipate the footing to step down deeper than normal. Even so, the influence line of the footing and foundation when projected down at a 1:1 slope might encroach some into the new septic tank. However, as this septic tank is replacing a tank that existed in this location for several decades, it is unlikely that the location of the tank will have any influence on the foundation. In addition, we can verify that the soils were not sloughing during the deep excavation, so if the tank integrity were to be compromised it would not cause a complete collapse of the soils. The foundation would not be in danger. We hereby request a waiver be issued allowing the septic tank- to remain in its current location. I believe that the original trench was improperly installed and inspected in 1979 beca~se the bottom of the test hole was at about elevation 93 ft. (datum assumed) while the bottom of the trench is at about 90 ft. elevation. That is about 10 feet below the water level of Jewel Lake, 150 feet away. There is not room for a mound system and the well separation radius prevents use of the higher portion of the lot. Please find all pertinent paperwork enclosed. Thank you. The scope of this project is the investigation for sui'hability of an on-site sewerage system. Included in ~his transmittal are: Test Hole Location Sketch Test Hole Log Explanatory Information Figure 1 Table A Sheets 1-3 · he exploration was conducted using a continuous flight? solid stem auger drilling rig, owned and operated by Denali Dril.~2n~, Inc. .Drilling was supervised, the test hole logged, and pe~coiation test performed by Mr. O. Hatch, Alaska Testlab geologist/senior field technician. The log of the test hole is included as Table A of this report. In iDterp~-eting the log, it would be helpful to utilize the explana~- tory .lnxormat~on contained in Sheets 1 through 3 of the report. When drilling was completed a 3/4" slotted PVC pipe was inserted ~n ~he hole to aid in determining the free water level. For th~ percolation test, the test hole was filled wi~h water and left overDigbt to saturate. On returning the next day~ the hole was reft[lied with water and the drop in the water level carefully monitored over the next 60 minutes. We recommend that the system be designed for an absorption area of 100 square feet per bedroom provided the trench bottoms in gravel at a depth of 11 feet or more. If the trench does not extend to-~e~atively clean gravel this recommendation does not apply as the sandy silt has a much lower permeability than the underlying gravels. This recommendation is based on criteria in the "Manual of Septic Tank Practice", U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Public Health Service. No water table was observed during drilling. A wet zone was encountered at 15 feet; however no free water was observed in the test hole four days after drilling. We recommend that the seepage trenches be inspected prior to installing the system as the above recommendations 'are based on a six inch test hole. The seepage trench will provide a much clearer picture of the subsurface conditions than the test hole. If conditions are different than encountered in the test hole, it may be necessary to modify the design. We hope %his report meets your present needs.
