Box 196650, Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for Lot 4A & 5, Block 6, Granite View Subdivision To whom it may concern: The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. A test hole was excavated in the area of the proposed upgrade. The septic system will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. We are proposing that a 1000 gallon septic tank, a biocycle unit and a 5 -wide trench type drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, an application rate of 2.0 gallons/day/f12 should be used. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 24 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 2.0 gallons/day/42 c. Number of Bedrooms: 3 d. Design Flow: 450+ gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 225 f12 f. Total Depth: 9 feet (max.) g. Effective Depth: 4 h. Width: 5.0 feet i. Minimum Length: 23 feet long j Effective absorption area = 230 ft2 k. Reduction Factor: 0.5 3. SURFACE WATERS: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. WAIVER: The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. We request that you issue an 80 feet well radius waiver on the subject property to the proposed septic system upgrade. The lots are generally flat in the area. There is a slight mound and the house between the well on the subject property and the proposed septic system. If the septic system were to overflow, it appears that the effluent would not travel toward the well head. The location of the septic system is in a very visible area so that if any effluent was to surface, it would be noticed and the problem corrected. The aquifer is fairly shallow with approximately 35 to 45 feet of silty, hardpan soils that have served to inhibit the migration of untreated wastewater into the aquifer. Recent water sample results indicated nitrate levels and coliform bacteria results to be satisfactory. Based upon the aforementioned facts, it appears that there is minimal risk associated with the 80 feet separation distance waivers. See the attached well logs and water sample results. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation and well radius waiver would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. OF HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION , q 1 01.986 RECEIVED On April 31 1986, Besse, Epps & Potts conducted well and septic adequacy tests for the single-family residence .located on Lots 4 & 5, Granite View Subdivision. Measurements were taken to verify the distances shown on the approved GAAB as -built (dated 8/9/71). Attached is an as -built showing the lot and water/septic system on-site. It has been noted on the as -built that a garage has been added and that the well is located ten feet behind the house. Further, the separation distances listed under the "well" section for the septic tank and seepage system should be ten feet further than as shown (82. and 105 feet respectively). Due to the separation distance of the well and the septic tan], being less than 100 feet (821), I am requesting a variance to that requirement. Points supporting the request are: 1) The well meets all MOA health and production requirements and has been in service since 1971 without adverse health effects. A satisfactory water sample test is attached. A sanitary seal is in place. 2) The elevation of the well is approximately five feet higher than ground level at the septic tank. The ground level at the seepage system is at an elevation ten feet lower than the well. Generally, the ground over the septic system slopes away from the well. 3) The septic tank is made of steel.. 4) The house (basement) is located between the well and septic tank. 5) The seepage system is greater than 100' from the well. For clarification, there was no well log available nor were there records of the soil classification or previous adequacy tests. BEP conducted an adequacy test on Thursday, April 3, 1986.
