SUBJECT: Lot 2A, Dunn Subdivision Septic System Permit We have reviewed your comments and made the following revisions concerning the permit to construct a septic system on Lot 2A, Dunn Subdivision: 1. 95% of the proposed absorption system area is contained in the 30' radius of Test Hole No. 1 which has a percolation rate of 4 minutes per inch and a corresponding application rate of 1.2 gallons per day per square foot. Test Hole No. 2 had a slower percolation rate and a lower application rate. We therefore lowered the application rate to more conservatively estimate the characteristics of the soil. Soil characteristics will be visually analyzed during construction to verify our estimates. 2. The existing septic tank has been added to the plan with the notation that it be decommissioned per code. 3. The profile view has been changed to agree with the site plan. 4. The specifications have been changed to reflect the new absorption system configuration. July 22, 2009 Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department On-Site Water and Wastewater Program 4700 Elmore Road Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 Subject: Lot 2A, Dunn Subdivision Septic System Design and Permit Application Impacts' to Adjacent Properties · Dear Onsite Services Engineer: The existing absorption system on the subject lot has failed and must be upgraded to prevent a health hazard. We are therefore requesting a permit be issued for the upgrade of the septic system to accommodate the six-bedroom home on the lot. The attached Site Plan and backup documentation identify the location and configuration of the existing and proposed septic system. The existing 2,000 Gallon Septic Tank will be pumped, crushed and backfilled on site. A new 2,000 gallon steel septic tank will be placed at the location shown. The existing absorption trench system will be left intact but abandoned in place. The new absorption trenches will be placed as shown. Also identified on the plans are the locations of the existing well on this and adjacent lots and adjacent septic systems. No conflicts exist between the proposed septic system and the wells on this or adjacent lots. Protective radii are shown to the adjacent wells. Drainage arrows are shown indicating the current drainage patterns. The drainage patterns will be maintained after construction. The test holes recently placed on the lot indicated sand and gravel with some silt (SM/GM). The percolation rate was determined to be 4.7 minutes per inch in Test Hole No. 1. The entire absorption system will be placed within the 30' radius of Test Hole No. 1. Percolation rates in Test Hole No. 2 were found to be 15 minutes per inch. We have designed the system to a slower application rate of 1 gallon per day per square foot. We are proposing to place 2-48' long trenches each 5' wide with a 4' effective depth. The total depth of the system will be 6'. Groundwater was noted in Test Hole No. 1 at 11' and stabilized at 10'. Test Hole No. 2 was placed to 20' with groundwater at 19'. Lot 2A, Dunn July 22, 2009 Page Two The ground surface on the lot slopes to the southeast and southwest in the area of the absorption trench. The trench will be placed parallel to the contours of the ground as much as possible and in conformance with design criteria. A minimum of 100' will be maintained between all components of the septic system and the proposed well and from any surface water in the area. If the system is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements apply: The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
