Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 RE: Lot 88A Snow Subdivision Absorption Field Investigation Dear Ms. Oswalt, We have conducted an on-site investigation of the additional absorption field indicated by Mr. Snow during previous conversations. Mr. Bob Wright, P.E., of our office made an on-site inspection on November 4, 1993, to verify the dimensions and depth of this additional absorption area. Mr. Wright, noted that the ;Vadditional pit area was approximately 10 feet in diameter by 4.5 feet deep with approximately 2.5 feet of cover over a plywood top which prevented fine grain soils from infiltrating the field. This absorption area is approximately square with rounded corners, and contains rock material from six inches to twelve inches in diameter. It is connected directly to the existing septic tank. The previously verified bed system provides 215 square feet of absorption area. In consideration of the data collected from the percolation test conducted by Mr. Carl Abrams of our office, we have given this soil a rating of 85 square feet per bedroom. This was the best rating available at the time the system was installed. Considering this soils rating, the Snows septic system would require an additional 55 square feet of absorption area. The wall area of the newly investigated absorption field presents approximately 141 square feet of absorption area, making it more than adequate for the three bedrooms existing in this home. PO Box 111349 Anchorage, Alaska 99511-1349 • (907) 345-1385/Fax 345-1386 Page: 2 Lot 88A Snow Subdivision November 5, 1993 During the excavation of the percolation test pit, water was encountered at 11.5 feet below the surface. It is unknown whether this is groundwater or septic system effluent. This water was monitored after 7 days and was found to be at 11 feet below the surface. This leaves 4 feet of separation between the bottom of the pit absorption area and the water level. The Snows have a new 1000 gallon steel septic tank on site and are ready to install it. If the above information meets your approval, we would like to give the Snows consent to install the new tank. Please contact us at your earliest convenience. f r v ) -,( Thank you for your consideration of this matter, should you have any questions or require additional information please feel free to contact us at any time. Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 RE: Health Authority Approval Lot 88B Snow Subdivision Dear Sirs: Our firm conducted a Health Authority Approval for the above indicated lot on September 15, 1993. Due to the age of this system, no information is on file with the Department of Health and Human Services. According to the owner, Mr. Bill Snow, the system was installed in 1964 or 1965, and was in place and operating when he purchased the home in 1969. Please see the attached sketch for a description of the system. Mr. Snow has just completed the drilling of anew well and the plumbing the -well to this home. The new well provides a minimum of 100 feet of separation between the.existing septic system and the well location. hit (F During our Septic adequacy test, we applied water at a rate of 7.5 gallons per minute, and were able to measure no accumulation of fluid through either of the monitoring tubes. This lot is located at the end of Nugget Lane, and has no adjacent residences for several hundred feet in any direction. During our on-site investigation, we were able to examine the.concrete cylinder block septic tank and note that it had two points which were leaking septic fluid into the soil. We have advised Mr. Snow to purchase a sealing compound, and seal all leaks in the septic tank after pumping. PO Box 111349 Anchorage, Alaska 99511-1349 9 (907) 345-1385/Fax 345-1386 We also noted that a monitoring tube, separate from the systems distribution line did not exist, and advised Mr. Snow to install a perforated monitoring tube in the system. Both of these tasks have been completed at this time. We have included a catalog cut of "Hancor Heavy Duty Plus", flexible perforated tubing. Our examination of the exposed edge of the bed drainfield and tile indicate the material used in this system is very similar to this product. During the excavation process to trench a new water service line form the new well to the house, we were able to observe the soil type present on this lot. The soil was a fairly homogeneous well graded gravel to gravelly sand with cobbles to 12" present and comprising approximately 15% of the soil mass. We observed this same clean, free draining soil at the site of the existing septic tank and bed system. Our visual classification of this soil as GW/SW and the ready acceptance of water during the adequacy test leads us to believe this soil falls within the 1-5 min/inch soil absorption category. Per the existing sketch, this system contains approximately 215 S.F. In consideration of the soil conditions we were able to observe during the excavation for the well supply line, and the lack of accumulation of water in the bed during the septic test, we recommend that this system be approved for the three bedroom house it serves.
