A test hole was excavated to the east of the septic system. The new septic system will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. The existing septic system consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank installed in 12/1999 and a crib type drainfield. We are proposing that a five foot wide drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitorin~gi and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that an application rate of 1.2 gallons/day/ti should be used. 2. TRENCII DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 3.33 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2 gallons/day/ii: ¢. I did not collect',~-ter samples to test for bacteria and nitrates at this time because the testing must be done within 30 days of filing for :t HAA certificate. According to the as-built inspection reports on file at the Municipal tlealth Department, the wastewater disposal system begins with. a telativaly new 1000-gallo-.- sapac lank L~t was L".stalled in December of 1999. To assess the adequacy of the system 1 ran ~tcr into the system through the eleanout downstream of thc new septic lank, ',x~le monitoring fluid levels in the septic tank and in the seepage pit standpipes, before, during and oiler the flow of xvater v-as stopped. The inttial fluid depth in the seepage pit was 67.5 inches and the addition of 208 gaUons of water caused the fluid depth to increase 24 inches m the point where it was backed up into the septic tank. I then carefully monilorcd the reabsorption rate and dete~£ued that tke p:,t is able to ~sorb water at a rate ol'276 gaI!ons per day when completely t~'~II. Unfortunately, this is less tha.n the ,$50 gallons per day requL~d for issuance ora IIAA certificate, so the system will need to be upgraded in order to qualifi:' for a tIAA certificate. As we discussed, it is possible that the performance of the system could be improved by treatment with hydrogen peroxide, TerraliP., or other method. But cxl:~fience b~_s fl~own L~.~t ~ese treatment options ate fairly ex~.-nslve, may or may not have any beneficial effect and any beneficial effect would probably be only g,l.o~-term. The operational life of all septic systems depends on the local soil conditions, groundwater levels that may fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system. These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of this septic system. The flow rate of the well may change due to subsurface conditions that may not be observed from the surface, and changes in land use and other factors that may impact the conditions of the aquifer feeding the well.
