The existing system is a log crib drainfield and concrete tank installed in 1968 as described in the original 1968 MOA permit. This drainfield has failed and is not capable of absorbing effluent from the septic tank. This is unsuitable for a 3-bedroom home. I am the owner of this home and am a Professional Engineer licensed in the State of Alaska experienced with on-site and community/municipal water and wastewater systems. This system will be installed and sized to also accommodate future expansion of the home to 4 bedrooms. All components are designed and will be installed in accordance with the latest revision of AMC 15.65. 1. Soils a. Soils in the area have been demonstrated to be gravelly sand types suitable for an application rate of 1.2 gallons/day/square foot from modern percolation testing on adjacent or nearby lots, including: i. Siefker #2 Block B-4 Lot 1 ii. Siefker #2 Lot A5-B b. Based on the latest revision of AMC 15.65 this application rate may be used for this design. c. Groundwater has not been encountered in historic test holes on adjacent or nearby properties, including bore logs: i. SW2635D001 ii. SW2635D003 iii. SW2635C004 iv. SW2635C005 v. SW2635C006 2. Septic Tanks a. The existing tank will be reused in conjunction with a new tank to increase retention time. b. The existing tank is sound, being of concrete in construction and verified by inspection. c. The existing tank has 4 feet of soil cover and will also be insulated with 2” of rigid insulation placed over the tank. d. The proposed tank will be 1250 gallons in size to accommodate potential future expansion of the home to 4 bedrooms. e. A minimum of 4 feet of soil cover will be placed over the new 1250-gallon tank as well as 2” rigid insulation. 3. Proposed Drainfield a. The required effective area for a 4-bedroom home based on a 1.2 gallons/day/square foot using 600 gallons per day design flow is 500 square feet. b. The proposed drainfield will be a deep trench system with 6-foot effective depth. c. The proposed trench dimension is 60 feet in length by 3 feet in width. d. Effective area for this proposed trench is 720 square feet. e. The drainfield will have a minimum of 4 feet of soil cover. f. All piping will be 4” PVC meeting the requirements of AMC 15.65. 4. Surface Waters a. There are no surface waters within 100’ of this system 5. Topography a. The slopes for the area the system will be installed in are in accordance with AMC 15.65.
